SIDBURY MILL OPEN FOR NATIONAL MILLS WEEKEND
Sidbury Mill will be open to visitors for tours (by appointment) at 10.30 on Saturday May 9th and at 11.00 and 14.30 on Sunday 10th May, as part of National Mills Weekend.
National Mills Weekend is the festival of the UK’s milling heritage, and the chance for everyone to explore their local windmills and watermills.
This annual event celebrates the heritage and history of mills, and the people who care for them today.
It has been organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) and its Mills Section since the 1980s and takes place each year on the second weekend of May.
There has been a mill in Sidbury since the 13th Century, being central to the community for much of the village’s history.
Although falling into disrepair on a number of occasions, it was restored during the 1990s and is now operational again, supplying stoneground bread flour to a number of local outlets including Drew’s in the village.
Sidbury Mill is only open for public tours during National Mills weekend, so it is a great opportunity for local people to look inside and find out more about the role of the mill in local life over the centuries.
River conditions permitting, visitors will get the chance to see the mill wheel turning and the main aspects of the equipment in operation. Please note that wheat will not be ground on these days for hygiene reasons. Tours will also include a comprehensive history of the mill and the ‘field to sandwich’ story of the flour.
Tours are by appointment only. Please email sidburymill@btinternet.com to secure your place or call Helen on 07769 743467.
Spaces strictly limited. Children over 10 years old only please.
Donations welcome with proceeds going to Sidbury church funds.
The current millers, Philip Parsons and Helen Munday will be delighted to welcome visitors to this unique mill in East Devon, emphasising that National Mills Weekend is a fantastic opportunity for people to explore their local heritage, and sample the contemporary output of the mill.
